If you have never created a resume or don’t know what one is, you are in the right place! A resume is a short document meant to quickly highlight aspects of who you are. It typically features your educational and work experiences, awards, interests, and other information you believe is important to who you are.
Resumes are especially important in athletic recruitment because coaches can quickly get a sense of who you are and if you would be a good fit academically and/or athletically for the school.
The great thing about creating a resume early in your high school career is that once you have one, editing or adding new information won’t take as much time in the future. Also, this document will be used during your college application process and beyond. Understanding the purpose of a resume now will help you in the future.
The Resources page has two resume templates for you to download and start creating yours today! Choose the one you like best and personalize it. Both templates are an example of the type of information you can put in your resume.
Here are a few things to remember:
- Resumes are typically one page long. We know you are all superstars and have accomplished a lot, but try and limit what you include to the most important and relevant information.
- Don’t be afraid to put information that is not related to athletics. If you are in a band, an altar server at church, or volunteer at the local animal shelter, etc., make sure to put that down in the appropriate section. These activities provide background to who you are.
- Make sure to reread and edit to make sure the formatting between each section is consistent. Attention to detail is an important skill that you can start honing now.
